The stratified charge engine has a main combustion chamber (1) extended to form a primary combustion chamber (2) in the zone of the inlet valve (4). A weak mixture is drawn through the inlet valve (4) and compressed by the piston (7). The piston (7) has a protuberance (8) which very nearly shuts off the primary chamber (2) from the main chamber (1). Additional fuel is injected through the valve (6) and the rich mixture thus formed is ignited by the sparking plug (5). The working cycle is completed in the conventional manner with the exhaust gas escaping through the valve (3). The suction stroke of th next cycle draws a fresh supply of weak mixture through the primary chamber (2) and scavenges the combustion products of the previous cycle.
