Methanisation of gas mixts. contg. mainly CO, CO2 and H2 with outlet temps. of at least 500 degrees C using as catalyst the prod. of thermal decompsn. and redn. of a complex cpd. of (A) an oxide of Ni and/or co and/or Fe, (B) opt. one or more difficulty reducible oxides of bivalent metals, (C) at least one oxide of a trivalent metal and (D) hydroxyl ions, divalent anions and water. Used as one stage in a process for making substitutes for natural gas from gas mixts. made by reaction of carbonaceous materials with steam and/or oxygen. The high temps. reaction allows the process to operate as a simple adiabatic reaction without internal cooling coils, quenching equipment or diluent gas. the outlet temp. is high enough to produce high pressure steam at up to 280 atmos. which can be used in turbines to drive gas compressors etc.
