The dwarf apple called Malling 27 is used as a rootstock for apple trees and has the property of accelerating the flowering of apple scions. It is obtained by pollinating the flowers of the apple Malling 13 with pollen from apple Malling 9 in order to obtain a member of the AK 1-29 famile, this is then multiplied by stooling, the smallest shoots being used to produce Malling 27 by stooling. One year old vegetative shoots are delicate, bushy, with fairly small leaves, folded and pointing upwards. The petioles point upwards and the stipples are small, slightly toothed and crescent shaped. In water and shoots are rather delicate, dark brown, and with a distinct longitudinal grain with a few yellowish brown lenticels. The buds are small pointed and greyish, tight and slightly irregular.
