Carboxylic acids prepn by carbonylation of unsatd cpds - using catalyst contg iodocarbonyl iridium hydride hydrate, controlling reaction by feed-back of infra-red spectrum peak data
Carboxylic acids are prepd. by reacting 2-30C ethylenically unsatd. cpds. at 125-225 degrees with CO+H2O, in presence of (a) an Ir cpd. or complex is not 50 wt. % of the Ir pref. being present as HIr(CO)2I2(H2O) with an infrared absorption band at 2098 cm-1 and (b) an iodide promoter. The catalyst gives high productivity. The reaction conditions can be controlled to give max. productivity by measuring the strength of the peak at 2098 cm-1 and regulating reaction conditions (temp. press. H2O concn. and I2 concn.) by a feed-back method.
