Unsatd. carbonyl cpds. of formula (I): CH2=CR-COOR' (I) (where R is H, lower alkyl or aryl; R' is H or lower alkyl) are prepared by reacting a cpd. of formula (II): RC CR (II), CO and a cpd. of formula (III) R'OH (III). Reaction is in the presence of a Pd (II) cpd., a cpd. of formula (IV): R" X (IV) (where R" = R; X is halogen) as catalyst and a cpd. contg. O, excluding R'OH. Cpds. such as methyl methacrylate are prepared with high selectivity, e.G. 96.6%, and with increased catalyst life and control of Pd black formation. The amt. of corroding active halide is greatly reduced. E.g. methyl acetylene, acetone, methanol, PdCl2 and HI produce methyl methacrylate with e.g. 96.6% selectivity.
