Antibiotic 20798 RP is produced by reduction of daunorubicin or one of its salts, as described in the parent patent, but using enzyme extracts obtd. from cells of Streptomyces lavendulae (ATCC 8664), Streptomyces, zoseochromogenes (ATCC 13400), Corynebacterium simplex (ATCC 6946) or Bacterium cyclooxydans (ATCC 12673) which need not be isolated from the culture. The extracts are obtd. by destroying the cell walls, pref. with lysozyme or ultrasonic waves. The enzyme extract is obtd. in soln. in the supernatant after centrifuging. In an example, 50cc of Corynebacterium simplex culture (culture 30 hrs. as an example 1 of he parent patent) were adjusted to pH 7 and 0.25 g lysozyme were added. The flask was kept for 1 hr at 37 degrees C on a 220 r.p.m. shaker. After centrifuging 10 mg. daunorubicin hydrochloride was added to the supernatant and the product cultured (as in example 1). After 16 hrs. 24% yield of antibiotic 20798RP was obtd.
