The lower pot (3) has a drainage hole in its base into which is inserted a headed spike, the point (5) embedding itself in the soil. This spike may have a straight or a spiral stem. The head (4) of the spike projects below the bottom of the pot and is placed in a corresponding recess (2) in a base (1). This is heavy and has a flat underside and deep sides enshrouding the lower portion of the pot. A variant uses a headed plug, fitting in the bottom of the pot before filling with earth.
