The car occupants are protected by an impact absorbing cushion (A) which is covered by an airtight flexible cover (3) and which is filled with a foam pad (1). A non return valve (4) allows air to escape when the cushion is compressed, but does not allow the foam to expand the cushion again. This provides damping for any impacts without any whiplash effect. The cushion is reflated through small inlet holes (14) or by pinching the non return valve. The cover can be removable for cleaning or replacement.
