In use, wall friction in the chambers causes differences in the velocity of the particles in the suspension so that coalescence of the particles occurs. The flow velocity of the suspension at any point in the chambers is such that no separation of the particles takes place in the chambers and is lower than the velocity at which coalesced particles would be disrupted by shearing action as a consequence of the velocity gradients in the vicinity of that point. In the embodiment shown, suspension from trough 5 passes through chambers 13, 14. Suspension from chamber 14 is passed into two chambers 16 (only one shown) connected in parallel and from each chamber 16 the suspension flows into two chambers 17 arranged in parallel.
