Breaking down solid and liquid waste to form a fertilizer - by inoculation with selected fungi and fermentation

The material is compressed or comminuted or is used as sludge. Ferrous metal is removed. It is fermented at room temp. It is inoculated with fungus, yeast or mould chosen from the classes Blastomycetes, Basidiomycetes or Deuteromycetes. Fungi imperfecti types are used which have a strong tendancy to form colonies and to compete with other organisms. They can be used alonr or in combination at levels at least 0.1% by wt. of the feed material. They are distributed through the material by milling and mixing it after inoculation. The material is left in closed but well aerated spaces. Method is used to treat solid domestic waste and sludge from treatment of domestic or industrial effluent treatment alone or in mixt., to produce fertiliser. The material is not destroyed but converted to a useful prod. The process can be controlled by varying the inoculation rate. The process can be applied to widely varying feedstocks. The organisms used can be chosen to have the ost favourable characteristics. Homogeneous prods. are made which are stable and have properties resembling those of natural manure.
