1355004 Unsaturated aldehydes and nitriles SNAM PROGETTI SpA 25 Jan 1972 [25 Jan 1971] 3529/72 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Unsaturated nitrile or unsaturated aldehyde is prepared from olefin by a process wherein a gaseous mixture comprising olefin, molecular oxygen, ammonia (when the desired product is nitrile) and, optionally, steam is contacted with catalyst which comprises, in oxygen-containing compound form, uranium and tellurium and molybdenum in the form of a composition containing, per atom of uranium, from 1 to 8 atoms of tellurium and at least 0À1 but less than 1 atom of molybdenum. The composition also may comprise, in oxygen-containing compound form, at least one "activator" element selected from the elements of Groups Ib, IIa, IIb, IIIa, IIIb (other than uranium), IVa, Va, Vb, VIb (other than molybdenum), VIIb and VIII, for example in an amount of up to 5 atoms of "activator" element(s) per atom of uranium; exemplified "activator" elements are boron, phosphorus, arsenic and antimony. The catalyst also may comprise carrier material, for example silica or titania, which may constitute from 5 to 95 weight per cent of the catalyst. Contacting may be effected at a temperature of from 300‹ to 550‹ C. (when the desired product is nitrile) or from 350‹ to 550‹ C. (when the desired product is aldehyde) and at a pressure which is at or slightly higher than atmospheric pressure; the catalyst may be in the form of a fixed bed or a fluidized bed. Examples prepare acrylonitrile and acrolein.
