asymmetrical hydrocarboxylation (carbonylation) of olefinically unsatd. cpds. (I) is carried out in the presence of an optically active cpd. (II) contg. atom(s) of gp. VB and VIB element(s), pref. N or P. (II) pref. is a phosphine, esp. a diphosphino deriv. of a carbo- or heterocyclic (un)satd. cpd. Optically active acids and esters can be produced, which are valuable end prods. or can be converted to valuable optically active alcohols, aldehydes or acid derivs., e.g. by redn. In an example, a mixt. of methyl 3-phenylpropanoate and (+)(S)-methyl 2-phenylpropanoate was prepd. from styrene, MeOH, and CO, using PdCl2 in conjunction with (-)-DIOP (2,2-dimethyl-4,5-bis-(diphenylphosphinomethyl)-1,3-dioxolane).
