New catalysts are prepd. by impregnating a Ni catalyst with an aq. soln. contg. an optically active substance (I) and an inorganic salt (II). Base catalyst is pref. Raney Ni (I) is pref. an optically active hydroxy acid (esp. tartaric acid). (II) is pref. an alkali metal halide (esp. NaBr or NaCl). The impregnation soln. pref. contains (I) and (II) respectively in amts. of 0.3-3 and 0.0006-25 times the wt. of Ni in the catalyst. Catalysts are useful for preparing optically active hydroxy cpds. from ketones, diketones, hydroxy ketones and keto carboxylic acid derivs. The catalysts are highly stereoselective and give high optical yields with acceptable reproducibility.
