In the prodn. of biaryl cpds. (I) by reacting esters (II) of an aromatic OH cpd. and a S oxo-acid (III) with a catalyst system (IV) of a Ni cpd. (V), a tert. aryl phosphine (VI), a metal salt (VII) and a reducing agent, the novelty is that (V) is a complex of NiC12 or NiBr2 and (VI); and (VII) is a Zn, Mn or alkali(ne earth) fluoride, chloride, bromide or salt of (III). (II) are pref derved from sulphonic, sulphinic, sulphenic, sulphuric or sulphurous ester, esp. aromatic sulphonic acids. (VII) is NaBr. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful as monomers for the prodn. of polyether-ketone and polyether-sulphones and as starting materials for the prodn. of optical whiteners, liq crystals cpds., polymer additives and dyestuffs. The process avoids the use of NaI in the catalyst system, avoiding discoloration of (I) by traces of I2.
