The vehicle is fitted with three or four axles with drive wheels on each side. The wheels may be fitted with tracks or with pneumatic tyres. The steering control is effected by the differential speed of the drive to either side. During cornering the suspension of the loading and trailing wheels is pulled in to lower the loading on those wheels and ease the turning movement. At the same time the suspension on the middle wheels is hardened to compensate for the loss of support on the end wheels and retain the ground clearance of the vehicle. This is especially important in combat vehicles and over difficult terrain.
