The high speed wire coiling unit is designed for continuous coiling onto a drum and has at least one wire gathering unit (7) which projects beyond the circumference of an end plate (5) attached to a flange of the drum or to the rotational shaft of the drum. An auxiliary drum is attached to the drive shaft of the drum and is used to spool the trailing wire end. A fixed housing (14) encircles this auxiliary drum. - The housing incorporates an inlet opening for the wire and forms a gap with the associated end plate via which the wire can be introduced so that its trailing end can be coiled inside the housing onto the auxiliary drum. This ensures that at least the one wire end intended for subsequent welding is not damaged by the coiling process.
