To permit of controlled steering of a tunnelling machine having a digging assembly 2 mounted in a shield 1, which is of smaller diameter than the diameter of cut of the digging assembly, there is secured to the forward part of the underside of the shield a pad 15 and the machine is rocked about this pad in accordance with the relative settings of tunnel wall-engaging presser members mounted on the shield. Preferably four such jack-actuated members are so mounted on the shield that one 16 acts vertically upwards, one 17 vertically downwards and two 18 act in lateral opposition. The vertically acting members 16, 17, are mounted in rearward extensions of the shield and the members 18 are so located on the shield as to be positioned slightly to the rear of the pad 15.
