The language teaching system has a multi-channel tape recorder, with a tape loop on which control signals and phrase fragments in the required language are recorded. Individual student desks each have means for selecting repetition of required phrases, together with means for inserting pauses between the phrases. - The phrase combining circuit (13) has multi-position switches (23-26) connected in parallel to the tape recorder and via relays (52-55) to the acoustic reproduction circuit (16), the relays (52-55) controlled by control signals from the tape recorder. A display screen at each desk provides a visual representation of each phrase during play-back.
