Fluid damping for periscope bearings - has viscosity variation compensation and additional friction cylinder linings

The fluid damper system has temperature increase compensation and is incorporated in a periscope bearing damper. The temperature compensation (due to viscosity changes) is achieved by variation in the size of a constriction in the shock absorber, in order to produce as near as possible constant damping. The periscope (1) housing has two bearings (4, 5) inside a bearing bush (6), the lower wall (8) of which is bolted (9) to the housing (2). The upper wall has inner flanges (10), and the enclosed chamber (12) is partly fluid-filled (13). A disc (7) supports an end seal (11). A hole (14) is drilled in the lower end (8) with a flexible connector tube leading to a fluid reservoir (18) kept at the same temperature as the housing by good thermal contact. Additional friction sleeves (20, 21) increase friction damping, and are attached to either the periscope or bearing box.
