Level measurement of a melt in a mould in continuous casting - using cobalt isotope and scintillation counter

Level meter for measuring the level of a melt in a chilled mould employed in continuous casting plant, using a holder for the radiation source and a rotary body. The novelty is that the stationary source is located in the centre of the holder and covered by the rotary body or shield which is provided with an opening used to bring the source to the working position. The periphery of the holder pref. corresponds with an isodose line, and the shield can pref. rotate through 30-90 degrees. The opening in the shield is pref. a slot with a min. width matching the usable dia. of the source. The radioactive 60 Co source used in the meter is covered by a lead shield when not in the working position.
