Molten metal sample collector for metallurgical analyses - has evacuated glass probe filled by pressure of metal on collapsible wall

The specimen extractor for use with molten metals comprises an evacuated hollow probe of high m.pt. glass. The upper tubular part is about 20mm long and opens into a disc-shaped chamber with convex walls. A tube of 6-8 mm dia. and 30-100 mm long, joins the chamber with the foot of the probe. The slightly pointed tip has a thickened wall to give strength and a bulbous part with a considerably thinner wall. The reinforced tip is forced through the crust of the molten metal. The thin wall collapses under pressure and the internal vacuum and molten metal fills the probe. When cool, the glass can be removed, providing a solid metal disc and rod for use in different analytical apparatus.
