Jute and/or coconut mat as ground cover around plants - suppresses weeds, acts as a mulch and holds rainwater

The mat consists of a felt under layer to which a woven top layer is sewn or stapled. The felt layer is made of jute, or coconut fibre, or a mixture of both. It is 1cm thick and weighs 30-50 kg per 100 m2. The woven layer is wholly of jute, 1mm fibres woven in 2-3 mm mesh. The mat is made in long lengths (for rows of plants) and squares, for single trees etc. The long lengths are cut down the middle with a wavy line and the plant stems protrude through the cut, turning back its edges. The squares are cut out for a tree stem and a stake.
