PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mat material intended for developing lawn for new application such as weed prevention. PSOLUTION: This mat material comprises using lawn which is withered in a condition of sticking root soil to grown lawn on a lawn mat which is formed in a mat-like shape. A method for producing the mat material comprises withering the lawn on the lawn mat by subjecting to at least one treatment selected from air-drying treatment, freezing treatment, heat treatment, microwave irradiating treatment, sealing treatment and drug treatment. A weed preventing method comprises laying the mat material using the lawn on the ground. A weeding method comprises covering flowering plants with the lawn mat which is formed in a mat-like shape in a condition of sticking root soil to grown lawn, or the withered lawn on the lawn mat.
