The weld is deposited using a filler wire 2-4mm in dia. with a welding current of 450-580 amps. at 30-32 volts. The burner nozzle is 30-50 mm from the weld which is made at a speed of 60-80 cm per minute. The process can be applied for the building up of worn railway rails or for providing new rails with wear-resistant deposits on their working surfaces. Reduced welding stresses occur when this process is used, so that subsequent straightening of the rail is minimised or avoided.
