A device making it possible to observe callers at a door incorporates a plate (8) or more than one, which seals a door opening, made of translucent or transparent material in one direction only. It may at the same time fulfil the function of a name plate, preferably with the door opening (2) extending only over part of its area. The plate may be let into the door (3) so that it is sunken. It may be retained by a peripheral border fixed to the door. The observer cannot be seen by the visitor from the other side of the door, and the device is more easily fitted to existing doors.
