The method establishes the stability of foams. A liquid is converted into a foam by beating in a gas with a whisk revolving at a standard rate. The liquid is contained in a transparent beaker (1) and the change with time of the foam surface observed by photodetectors. The whisk may be a double action beater (3) closed at the top. The photodetectors (5) are arranged above each other and are connected to a recorder. The dimensions of the beaker depend on the height of the beaker, but a volume of 500 to 1000 ccm and a height of 8 to 15 cm are typical.
