Hair dyeing compsn. contains standard couplers for oxidn. hair-dyes and =1 2-hydroxy-4,5,6-triamino-pyrimidine, (I), as developer component. In the formula R1 and R2 are H, 1-4C alkyl, aralkyl, aryl, -(CH2)n-X or opt. substd. heterocyclic 5- or 6-membered ring with 1 or 2 N-atoms or with 1 N-atom and 1 O-atom. n = 1-4 and X is OH, halogen, -NH2, -NHR1 or -NR1R11. R1 and R11 may be 1-4C alkyl or, together with N, may form a heterocyclic ring contg. a further N or O. (I) may be used as (in)organic salts. Specifically (I) is 2-hydroxy-4,5-diamino-6-piperidino-pyrimidine. Hair dyes are used in cosmetic compsns., e.g. creams, emulsions, gels or solns. Shades achieved range from light-brown to olive-brown and green to red. (I) form strong shades, are water-soluble, resist storage, are non-toxic and do not irritate skin. Satisfactory dyeing can be achieved by oxidative coupling by air-O2. Oxidising agents may be used for lightening in addn. to dyeing. In an example, 2-hydroxy-4,5-diamino-6-piperidino-pyrimidine was prepd. from 2-hydroxy-4-chloro-6-amino-pyrimidine and piperidine; followed by reaction with NaNO2 and Na dithionite redn. in alkaline soln.
