Hair dyeing prepns. based on oxidn. dyes and tetraamino-pyrimidine cpds. as developer, are improved by the use of monohydroxy-isoquinolines (I) as coupler component. In (I) one of X and Y is OH and the other, as well as gps. R1-R5, = H or 1-4C alkyl, such that is not 3 alkyl gps. are present in the mol. (I) are stable, non-toxic and dermatologically harmless, and give fast tints. The coupler component is pref. used in equimolar amts. or in slight excess w.r.t. the developer cpd. The oxidative coupling reaction may be accomplished with atmospheric O2 or with chemical oxidising agents such as H2O2 or addn. prods. of this with urea, melamine, Na borate, etc. Typical cpd. (I) is 5-hydroxy-isoquinoline.
