A roof garden comprises a vegetation layer (20) in which plants take root, with an aerator (13,26) for supplying air to the root zone of the plants. Beneath the vegetation layer may be a drainage layer (17) which is at least partially free from standing water, with the water free area communicating with the atmosphere via at least one air channel (13,26). The air channel may be formed at the edge of the garden, as an intermediate gap in the garden enclosure (2), between the enclosure and the vegetation layer. Another air channel may be formed by a pipe (26) passing through the vegetation layer. Beneath the drainage layer may be a waterproof film (10) which is laid on top of the resilient protective layer (6).
