A counter and/or display mechanism, partic for use in coin-operated automatic machines, with several counter wheels on a common mechanism is designed for improved operating reliability. It is designed in partic to avoid the fault in gaming machines whereby the roller reset mechanism fails to reset the lens roller to zero and only the units roller operates. A stud (25) is provided on each electromagnetically operated ratchet pawl (12) and engages a lug (20) on the next lowest roller (1) when the pawl is engaged in a notch (11) on its roller (2). This prevents the next lowest roller from operating unless the pawl and associated stud are raised.
