The ink roller has two ratchet wheels (2, 14) at each end. One has a pawl (15) mounted on a fixed axis (16). The other has a pawl (6) mounted on a rod (5) connected to a tie bar (7) on one side. The tie bar is joined to a variable-throw crank (8). The opposite end of the rod is joined to a spring loaded collar (4) which carries a friction plate (11). The roller rotates by movement of the crank, and the pawl (15) prevents counter rotation.
