A gas discharge matrix display is for alpha-numeric characters and uses display and transport cells coupled by static shift registers to provide a flicker free display. The matrix display consists of a front plate (1) onto which are attached transparent electrodes (11) coupled in columns to a common line to which a shift pulse (PHI1) is applied. The display cells (D), of a cylindrical cross section, are located beneath the cover in a 5 x 7 matrix. An intermediate plate (3) has small openings connecting with an insulating plate (4) containing transport cells (T). The bottom plate has electrodes (21-22 etc. and 31, 32 etc.) coupled to shift pulse lines (PH12, PH13).
