Ethylene polymerisation using Ziegler catalyst system - contg. bis-cyclopentadienyl-titanium di-alkyl cpd., aluminium tri-alkyl cpd. and water

New Ziegler catalyst system for prepn. of polyethylene by ethylene polymerisation at -80 to +120 degrees C, contains (1) a bis(cyclopentadienyl)-Ti-di-1-4C-alkyl cpd. (I), (2) an Al tri-1-4C alkyl cpd. and (3) water. Mol. ratio (I): (II) is 1:1 to 1:105 (1:2 to 1:50). Mol. ratio (II):H2O is 6:1 to 6:9 (3:1 to 1:1). (I) introduce no halogen into polymer. Mol. wt. of polymer can be regulated over a very wide range, e.g. from liq. oligomers at high temps. to high temps. to high wt. plastics at low temps. In an example, catalyst contains bis(cyclopentadienyl)Ti-dimethyl, AlMe3 and water.
