A self-locking screw has an irregular thread form such as to oppose release of the screw. In one example the screw thread has flanks of wave form (1). The corresponding nut thread has a similar form and the threads have enough axial clearance to allow their peaks to ride over one another. On tightening the peaks of the one thread seat in the valleys of the other thread. In another example, the screw thread has flanks of saw teeth form. In this case the nut thread has a smooth flank. Release is opposed by the saw tooth flanks indenting the smooth flanks.
