Briquettes for the desulphurisation of molten steel consists of (1) pieces of ferrous metal pressed in statistical disorder into an intermingled network contg. interstices in the form of a network, and (2) a rare earth metal ocuppying the interstices of the network, the amount of rare earth metal being 15-80 wt %, based on impregnated network. The basic network has a length of 3-230 mm, a width of 0.4-25 m, a thickness of 0.025-2.5 mm, an s.g. of 6.3-1.2 g/cm3 a porosity of 20-85%, and a transverse tensile strength of at least 0.14 kg/cm2. Enables the rare earth metal, which is the active desulphurisation agent, to be introduced into the molten steel bath at a controlled rate, and effects more efficient utilisation of this metal. No undesirable impurities are introduced into the bath. The briquettes are relatively cheap, as serap ferrous metal can be used.
