beta-glucuronidase (beta-G) activity can be inhibited by glucoronic acid (GA) and/or glucoronic acid gamma-lactone (GAL), opt. in combination with vitamin B12. Compsns. contain e.g. 0.1-20 (pref. 0.1-10 or 0.1-5) wt. % GA or GAL and B12 concn. is 1-1100 gamma per ml soln. emulsion or suspension or per g semi(solid)prepn. GA and GAL can be used to protect animal or plant tissue against microorganisms esp. against bacteria and fungi. beta-Cr increases the resistance of bacterial to bacteridical and bacteriostatic medicaments, the damaged microorganisms are reactivated and stimulated to fresh growth. GA and GAL decrease the beta-G concn. and intensify the antibiotic therapy and are esp. suitable for treatment of acne, boils, cystopyolitis, cholesystitis, sinusitis, otitis, resistance to antibiotics, foudroyant septicaemia in babies, prophylactic treatment of inflamed mucous membranes, influenza, topical treatment of wounds, pathological loss of hair, increased dandruff formation, and greasiness, and skin itches. GA and GAL also reduce the smell due to sweat and increase the strength of the gums, making parodontosal development difficult. GA and GAL make tissues more resistant to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and allergene and the cancer-like proliferation on the roots of plants, caused by Bacterium tumefaciens. Vitamin B12 potentiates the inhibitor activity of GA and GAL.
