A device for monitoring and regulating the temperature inside a core of extruded thermoplastics comprises a heat exchanger element which is mounted directly in or inserted directly into the interior of the extruder head duct, where it comes into contact with the flow of material. The heat exchanger element is supplied with heating or cooling gas, air or liquid through inlet and outlet ducts. The hottest part of the extruded material, i.e., the central region which has just been in contact with the surface of the extruder screw, can be cooled or otherwise temperature regulated by its direct contact as it flows over the surface of the heat exchanger element.
