The rotatable drum on the chopping machine has a sheath between an open and a closed end, with chopper blades on its periphery, fixed along openings so as to cut chips and guide them towards the interior. An encompassing casing incorporates a guide opening for chips emerging from the open end. Fan blades (18) are fixed on the outside of the end wall (4) of the drum (3), to drive air through this walls openings (17) as the drum rotates. In the course of its axial passage through the drum, the current of air carries the chips, which have entered the drum through the openings (12) in the sheath through the open end and out of the drum. The drum sheath may have an inside wall which widens towards the open end. The casing has air intake openings opposite to the openings in the drum end wall. The tendency is overcome for the chips to be held back against the inside of the drum by centrifugal force.
