The rotary coal cutting head has a double ring of pick holders mounted on a carrier ring, each fitted with a pick (8) fitted into it, to project radially outwards. This pick has a stepped stem which fits into a stepped hole in the holder (2) with a flange abutting a front face, held in position by a U shaped clip (7). The two arms (16) of the U, which are splayed outwards at their ends (19) are pushed through two holes (13) through the holder, one each side of the stem to locate in a groove (12) around the stem. This clip (17) is of square section metal. The two holes (13) terminate at the bottom in a recess (15) each side of the holder.
