In an applicator pad for an active chemical substance the applicator comprises a preloaded layer of absorbant material backed by or incorporating a hollow impermeable pocket which is open at one end. Pref. the reagent is contained by an absorbant sponge or wadding made of paper, non-woven tissues, cotton or acrylic fibre wool or a foam made of regenerated cellulose, polyurethane, polyvinyl formals or acetals or some other synthetic sponge. The backing film or pocket may be of polyester, polyamide, polystyrene, polyolefin, polyvinyl chloride or of an impermeable treated paper or fabric. Pref. the wadding is precoated (by extrusion) with a layer of material (polypropylene) compatible with the material (polyolefin) from which the pocket is either prefabricated or formed by simultaneous cutting and welding of superimposed layers of wadding and film. The loaded pad may be a fingerstall, a mitten or an arm length glove, may be packed in a sachet filled with an inert atmos., and should be sterilisable.
