4-Aminomethyl-cyclohexane carboxylic acid, useful as starting material for prepn. of polymers or pharmaceuticals is prepd. by hydrogenating p-aminomethyl benzoic acid (I) using Ru catalysts in the presence of NaOH, KOH and/or Ca(OH)2 in amts. of 1-35 (1-10) esp. 2 g. equiv./mole (I), and using 0.025-0.25 wt.% Ru metal w.r.t. (I), in catalyst per reaction. Pref. reaction takes place with a 3.5 - 1 H2 : (I) mol. ratio, at 90-200 (155) degrees C under an H2 press. of 50-200 (80-150) esp. 100 kg/cm2.
