An appts. for separating isotopes in which the element to be sepd. is a solid and forms the internal cone of a hollow charge of explosive, incorporates a means of recovering material enriched in the lighter isotope by making it pierce hole in a plate of a suitable thickness and collecting the material discharged. The material of the core is not collected, because the thickness of the plate is only slightly less than the perforating ability of the jet. Alternatively the force of the explosion is used to obstruct the collector before the core material reaches it. the treatment of the sample is almost instantaneous and the process is much simpler than existing processes, e.g. gaseous diffusion.
