The gas travels upwards through a cylindrical casing, which forms a sepn. chamber contg. a basket on which a circular row of vertical baffle plates is located. The baffle plates are aligned tangentially w.r.t. the bore of the chamber. In the bottom gas inlet of the casing are blades which create a vortex in the gas, so centrifugal force drives the solids and liqs. radially through the gaps between the baffle plates. The solids and liqs. then flow down the wall of the chamber to an outlet. The baffle plates are located on a pitch circle with a dia. corresp. with the dia. of the gas inlet and outlet. A sepn. efficiency of 99.5% can be obtd. with gas speeds up to 15 metres/second.
