The vertical column has a top, tangential injector for the liq. The injector causes the liq. to rotate round the axis of the column as it flows downwards along a helical path. The height (H) of the column is at least five times its dia. (D). On the bottom end of the column is a tangential extn. pipe (I) for the suspension. Pipe (I) is aligned at 90 deg. w.r.t. the axis of the column, and forms an angle of min. 90 deg. with the direction of flow of the suspension just before the latter enters pipe (I). Pipe (I) thus causes an abrupt change in the direction of flow of the liq. Esp. used when treating a liq. contg. ore particles in suspension. When a gas, e.g. O2, CO2, or air, is also present in the liq., cavitation erosion can occur in pumps used to transport the liq. The invention removes the gas to prevent damage to the pumps.
