An evaporative distillation plant in which the liquid to be evaporated is run as a thin film on to the outer surfaces of evaporator tubes. The liquid is first gathered in a receiver, held at slightly above atmos. press, which supplies a spray header located above and extending across the tubes of a horizontal tube bundle, the header having a series of outlet passages which direct the liquid as a vertical curtain running down via the tube bundle spaces. Used for distillation of liquids, partic. sea-water to be desalinated. Controlled distribution of liquid on to evaporating surfaces gives high distillation rate for area of surfaces.
