Hood for steel making converters - fitted with skirt for gas collection even when converter is tilted

Plant for the collection, without combustion, of the exhaust gases leaving the top of a converter, using an extn. hood fitted with a skirt, a suction fan, and a valve for controlling the gas flow. The skirt surrounds the upper part of the converter when the latter is in a vertical position and also when the converter is tilted. Part of the skirt can be retracted when the converter is charged. The retractable part of the skirt is pref. mounted on a trolley which travels along a horizontal track. A seal is used between the moving and fixed parts of the skirt. Used in the refining of steel, where the skirt and hood collect the gases irrespective of the position of the converter. The thermal capacity in the exhaust gas can be exploited, and noxious gases do not contaminate the atmos.
