Cutting and telescoping rigid foam sheet for contour modelling - to produce a form quickly from an equivalent area of sheet

The sheet of expanded polystyrene or similar material is cut to a pattern representing all the contours or steps coincident with the plan area of the sheet. Then by sliding adjacent segments telescopically with respect to the thickness of the sheet, a three dimensional form is developed. Successive steps must be less in depthn than the thickness of the sheet. The layers may be anchored at their relative heights by spot welding with heat or adhesives. The sheets are pref. cut using a low voltage hot wire perpendicular to the plane of the sheet to follow contour profiles marked on projected on to the surface. Used for mfr. of architectural and/or topographical models, e.g., as supports for appraising the effects of changes or addns.
