Magnetically suspended train shock absorber - has linear characteristic spring in parallel with damper

The combined spring-shock absorber is designed for safe and comfortable deceleration of a magnetically suspended train in the event of suspension failure. A number of the spring-dampers are fitted between the vehicle body and landing pads. The design consists of mounting a spring with a linear deflection characteristic in parallel with a damper which has a linear damping characteristic in extension and a quadratic characteristic in compression. The optimum value of the force from the spring damper is about half as much as the smallest value possible with a system having no damper.
