1486476 Determination of minute quantities of iodine JAPAN ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE 30 Oct 1974 [31 Oct 1973] 46905/74 Heading G1B A method for determining an extremely minute quantity of radio-active iodine in a aerosol of radio-active sodium comprises flowing through arc discharge tube 1, air and an aerosol of radio-active sodium contaminated with an extremely minute quantity of radio-active iodine, to gasify the aerosol and associate the gaseous product, the gas stream then flowing through cooling means 2 where the sodium forms particulate sodium compounds and the iodine forms gaseous compounds which are not reactive with the sodium compounds, collecting the particulate sodium compounds on dust-catching filter 4 which may be of cellulose-asbestos and collecting the gaseous iodine on active carbonimpregnated filter paper 6, and quantitatively determining the radio-activities of the collected sodium and iodine using means 7, 8, for example G-M counters or scintillation detectors 7 and rate meters 8.
