High intensity photoluminescent glasses comprising certain alkali metal-rare earth metaphosphates are suitable for use in display panels, indicator lights, and decorative illumination, etc. These glasses, with a suitable activator, have the formula: ##EQU1## where n is from two to siz, x is from 0 to 0.2 and y is from 0 to 1; M is an alkali metal; Q is a thallium or silver activator and R is at least one of europium and terbium.
